Contrary to expectations, oxygen-28 exhibited an astonishingly brief existence. Its nucleus, resembling an overstuffed bucket, shed four neutrons almost immediately, leaving behind oxygen-24. Detecting these decay products simultaneously confirmed the creation of oxygen-28.
